Mission

The Coalition for Nonviolent Living promotes and nurtures the vision that the philosophy and practice of nonviolence can serve as a universal value for guiding all facets of human life.  We provide dynamic and synergistic opportunities for networking people and organizations who want to create a nonviolent, just, and sustainable way of life for all.

Our History

The idea for the 2008 Nonviolence as a Way of Life Conference began at a 2005 Oregon Network for Compassionate Communication Board Meeting.  Several Board members in the Eugene area began to meet regularly starting in the Spring of 2006.  In October 2006, we sent out hundreds of invitations to individuals and groups whose work models nonviolent, just, and sustainable living.  Our first large introductory meeting was held on December 3, 2006.  We have had a monthly meeting and an e-newsletter since that time.  Since the 2008 Conference is a project of the ORNCC, we needed to develop a name for the ORNCC to "do business as".  During one of our monthly planning meetings, we brainstormed about possible names for this operation.  We chose "Coalition for Nonviolent Living" to reflect our conviction that nonviolence can be an organizational paradigm for all areas of human life, as well as our collective work on this project.  In June of 2007, the ORNCC filed paperwork officially declaring their project: "the Coalition for Nonviolent Living."  The CNL is currently comprised of over 100 people and organizations based in the Pacific Northwest whose work or interest promotes some piece of the vision for Nonviolence as a Way of Life.
